Since 1938, the government of Finland has sent expectant parents a cardboard box filled with products (baby formula, diapers, teething toys, etc.). The most fascinating aspect of this program is that the cardboard box is not meant to be disposed of or recycled; it's designed to be used as a makeshift crib.
Things have a way of entering our lives. Soon enough, those things usually need a place: a shelf, a drawer, a closet, or a box. When you finally find the right place, these things become tethered on both a physical and psychic level.
One of our first products (after the axe) was a first-aid kit. As some may remember, our first-aid kits were housed in a white powder-coated steel box with our trademark red X emblazoned on the front. One of these kits ended up hanging on the wall of our old workshop in Lower Manhattan.
As with most workshops, we had an unruly amount of supplies (screws, hinges, paint, sandpaper, etc) that needed tethering. The contents of our first-aid kit were neatly tethered. And so, working with the maker of our first-aid kit boxes, we developed what we called the "strongbox".
But the strongbox, specifically the 6-inch, is the paradigm: it's hard to imagine a more straight-forward, Best Made box. This was our first box, and likewise it's where we picked back up when we relaunched last year.
Be it a cardboard box for soon-to-be parents in Finland, or a powder-coated box for supplies that could one day save a life—a good box doesn't just organize; it sets the stage. Even an empty box contains possibilities.
