Hey Team,
We’ve spoken about the difference between motivation and discipline. Motivation is fleeting whereas discipline is the true skill to master in order to reach your goals, both in and out of the gym. Now, discipline lands itself in another face off, this time, with rigidity. Being rigid is defined as being unable to bend or be forced out of shape; not flexible. Flipping the narrative to us as human beings rather than an unbendable object, it means being unable to be changed or adapted.
Adaptability; probably one of the most underrated life skills; to be able to pivot, flow and reprogram learned behaviors. Whether you're faced with an injury or your company’s fallen under new ownership, being adaptable is crucial for long term success (and short term sanity). You’re usually given two options in tough situations; roll over and wallow in defeat, or rise to the occasion and take on the challenge ahead. Psst…here’s a hint; the latter is the path to growth.
“You’re rambling again,” said my cat, probably, as he’s perched above my shoulder waiting for our night time lounge to begin.
So when it comes to being rigid versus being disciplined, where do we want to land when it comes to a wellness routine? A lot of us, myself included, are often rigid in the way we think about training, eating and even resting. Maybe you have a program, where each day is clearly defined in its own dedicated cell of an excel spreadsheet and should you have the NERVE to variate from THE PLAN then off with your head. Sound familiar? I’m looking at you too, chicken, broccoli and rice guys.
Rather than viewing your workout routine as an inflexible, rigid routine, have the discipline and commitment to moving your body every day. Maybe it’s the rigorous leg day or maybe it’s joining in on the pickup basketball game at the park. Maybe it’s running as fast and as hard as you can to blow off steam or maybe it’s dialing down your nervous system with a yoga class. My point here today friends, is that you must be open and receptive to what your body and mind are craving in the present day and develop enough of a relationship with yourself to provide it with what it’s asking for.
So, the next time you’re opening your workout planner or tracker to get after it like the savage you are, check in with your mind, body and soul.
If you want to hang out a bit longer, check out our latest episode of the pod where we sit down with fitness pro Alex Silver-Fagan and chat through intentional movement theories, finding spirituality and how evolving into different versions of yourself is key to a healthy life.
Stay loose, but stay the course.
Until next time. 👋
