In 1977, the United States launched the twin spacecrafts Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 into outer space, each mounted with a Golden Record.
Created by Brooklyn-born astronomer and science communicator Carl Sagan, these gold disks contain a snapshot of life on Earth: 115 encoded images, greetings in 55 languages, 27 pieces of music, 21 sounds, and messages from world leaders. The Golden Records were dispatched as a message in a bottle, a time capsule of humanity, intended for any life that might exist beyond Earth.
This is just one of the shimmering tales you’ll encounter in Solid Gold. Whether in art, cultural artifacts, objects of adornment, or technological wonders, gold has served as a powerful form of communication and self-expression for millennia.
