Here's my hot take: if a company claims to be "sustainable" but isn't 100% transparent about their sourcing, you should raise an eyebrow and ask a few more questions.
We wrote a lot more on this topic, but it got too long for an email. Take a read here for more on the terms "sustainable" vs. "regenerative" and why it all comes back to sourcing for us.
Why bring this up in an Earth Day email? Because how and where we source our seaweed is what drives our regenerative mission and is the very foundation of our business. Supporting West Coast regenerative ocean farmers fulfills so many of our sustainability goals:
1. working directly with farmers to maximize our impact & the price they get paid
2. ensuring our seaweed is traceable to the very bay it was grown
3. sourcing kelp on the West Coast, eliminating emissions from international transport
4. prioritizing regeneratively-farmed seaweed rather than wild-harvested for its environmental benefits and ecosystem services
(Along these lines, sustainability is a big criteria in the Good Food Awards happening next week! Stay tuned to see if our new product Ume Shiso Furikake is a winner!! )
Celebrating our Earth and a regenerative future this Earth Day,
Avery & Catherine
