If you know me, you know that my mum is my favorite person and arguably the most intelligent little ball of fire you'll ever meet—also a casually acclaimed architect. Her mother, my Nani, took that fieriness and intelligence to another level—one of the first women to become an OB-GYN in India, in a time when it was rare and stigmatized for women to work outside the home. Growing up with two powerful women meant that the bar for approval was always higher than felt fair. So, the day mum said she liked our Chai Masala, and the day nani said that our Haldi Doodh was better than her own were definitely days I cried for the approval my younger self had always wanted.

I know Mother’s Day can also be difficult for many of us. Yet, it feels important to celebrate, not just our mothers, but any and all maternal figures in our lives——those by family, those by spirit, and those who have cared for and nurtured us along the way. Our amazing partner farms too, wouldn’t be able to do what they do without the formidable—and often invisibilized—forces that are their matriarchs: Chachu Lakose of the Baraka Estate that grows our cardamom, Venkata Narasamma of the Kasaraneni Farm that grows Pragati Turmeric, Shirley Parameswaran of the Aranya Pepper farm, and Sulochana Meiyappan of the Anamalai Estate that grows our cacao, nutmeg and mace, among so many others! Amidst the management of farms, they also somehow squeeze in many labors of love—cooking, feeding, nurturing, educating, and empowering. Thank you, we love you and we see you!
