- Websites Break California Privacy Law at 'Industrial Scale,' Survey Finds [themarkup.org]
Even when you tell websites not to track you, they may be doing it anyway. A new audit found that Google, Microsoft, and Meta are routinely ignoring California's privacy law, which requires sites to respect a do-not-track signal that users can turn on in their browsers. Researchers tested over 7,000 popular websites and found widespread violations, with Google ignoring the signal 86% of the time. "They don't make any substantive effort to comply," said the audit's lead researcher, a former Google privacy engineer.
- The Shocking Secrets of Madison Square Garden’s Surveillance Machine [wired.com]
A new investigation reveals that Madison Square Garden owner James Dolan has built a sprawling private surveillance empire, using facial recognition technology to track, ban, and intimidate fans, lawyers, journalists, and employees — anyone deemed a threat to his ego or business interests. Among the most troubling findings: one fan’s every move in the venue was monitored for two years, not because she posed any danger, but because of her gender identity. The investigation is a stark reminder that biometric data collected at venues, concerts, and sporting events can be weaponized far beyond its stated purpose. "We're in a time of private armies now," one security executive warned.
- Netflix Ad Privacy Updates [advertising.netflix.com]
Netflix recently sent out an email informing subscribers of updates to their Terms of Use & Privacy Statement. In the email, they said, "We updated the language about advertising so we can bring you more ways to enjoy Netflix, like podcasts, live shows and other new experiences, across all plans. Our advertising partners may also use your personal information to show you behavioral ads.” You can read more about Netflix's advertising changes here.
This tracking is enabled by default, but the good news is that you can control your Netflix ad preferences. Go to Your profile -> Account -> Edit settings -> Privacy and data settings -> Allow behavioral advertising... and toggle off. Netflix also created this overview about how to stop certain uses of your personal information.
