- Meta to Set Up $50m Privacy Payment Scheme to Settle Australian Proceeding [techcrunch.com]
"Meta has agreed to a $50 million payment program to settle a long-running proceeding in Australia related to misuse of information for political ad targeting, the country’s information watchdog OAIC announced." Under the settlement, "the company has agreed to establish a payment program for eligible Facebook users who 'may have suffered loss or damage as a result of interferences with their privacy.'"
- Fortnite Players Get Millions in Refunds for Unwanted Purchases [nytimes.com]
The federal government says Fortnite led players to unwanted purchases through manipulative online practices, or "dark patterns," which could result in a $245 million payout for the parent company, Epic Games.
According to an F.T.C. spokesperson, "payments and checks worth more than $72 million were sent out to a group of more than 629,000 Fortnite players on Monday," and "the average refund was about $114." No details yet on the next set of refund payments — the F.T.C. says it "depends on how many more people submit claims online before the deadline of Jan. 10, 2025."
- Photobucket Opted Inactive Users Into Privacy Nightmare, Lawsuit Says [arstechnica.com]
"Photobucket was sued... after a recent privacy policy update revealed plans to sell users' photos—including biometric identifiers like face and iris scans—to companies training generative AI models," reports Ashley Belanger.
"The proposed class action seeks to stop Photobucket from selling users' data without first obtaining written consent, alleging that Photobucket either intentionally or negligently failed to comply with strict privacy laws in states like Illinois, New York, and California by claiming it can't reliably determine users' geolocation."
