- Your Boss Wants You Back in the Office. This Surveillance Tech Could Be Waiting for You [wired.com]
As more companies push for a return to office, Wired asks: what exactly are we returning to? Biometric workplace monitoring is "expanding from blue-collar jobs to pink-collar industries and even white-collar office settings... approximately 70 to 80 percent of large US employers now use some form of employee monitoring, and the likes of PwC have explicitly told workers that managers will be tracking their location to enforce a three-day office week policy."
- UK Probes How TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur Protect Child Privacy [techcrunch.com]
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) "has launched investigations into three social media companies over how they go about protecting the privacy of children on their respective platforms." TechCrunch reports the ICO is "looking into how TikTok uses personal information of 13- to 17-year-olds to recommend videos, 'in light of growing concerns' around how young people are presented with harmful content," and "how Reddit and Imgur assess the age of its users in the U.K., as well as how they use children’s personal information."
- NFL Teams Gathered Detailed Consumer Data Without Standard Notice or Opt-Outs [wsj.com]
According to a new report from the Digital Advertising Accountability Program (DAAP), "a combination of websites and apps for all 32 teams in the National Football League collected detailed data from consumers" — including precise movements and locations — "without directly informing them that their data could be used for targeted advertising, or providing them with clear ways to opt out."
The NFL "worked with the DAAP for more than a year before the report’s release to update its global privacy policy," the report said, acknowledging that the NFL is now compliant with the the program's data privacy principles.
