- Health Privacy Bill Seeks Protections for Data Collected by Apps, Smartwatches [therecord.media]
A California lawmaker "introduced legislation that would add new privacy protections to health data gathered by smartwatches, health apps and other new technologies" not covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
"Smartwatches and health apps change the way people manage their health," Sen. Bill Cassidy said in a statement. "They’re helpful tools, but present new privacy concerns that didn’t exist when it was just a patient and a doctor in an exam room."

"For many young adults, college is the first time they’ll be managing their own digital lives, and that can make them easy targets for hackers and scammers to exploit," says Marshall Gunnell for CNET. "The good news is that staying safe doesn’t require that much effort."

- Use strong, unique passwords
- Turn on multi-factor authentication
- Keep software and devices updated
- Sling TV First to Settle California Data Privacy Lawsuit Amid Sweep of Streaming Services [duckduckgo.com]
Sling TV, a streaming service owned by DISH Network, "will pay $530,000 to settle a lawsuit from California accusing it of failing to provide an easy-to-use mechanism for consumers to stop the sale of their personal information and provide sufficient privacy protections for children."
"'Our investigative sweep looked at all the different ways consumers should be able to stop the sale of their data when using streaming services,' said California Attorney General Rob Bonta in a statement. "'We take privacy rights seriously and Sling TV was not providing consumers an easy way to opt out of the sale of their personal data as required.'"
