“Longevity is all anyone’s talking about online,” says CNN’s Anna Stewart. She spent the last year implementing lifestyle changes, taking supplements, and experimenting with health-related technologies—all to answer the question of whether improving longevity with today’s science and technology is more than just a fantasy. Her journey led her to NAD+ and to Elysium chief scientist
Leonard Guarente, Ph.D., described as
“one of the world’s leading experts in longevity.”
Stewart and Dr. Guarente discussed the definition of aging, the risks of biohacking, and the importance of clinical research. While there are many pills and powders on the market promising to extend our lives, Stewart says, few have undergone the rigor of clinical trials like NAD+ supplements—and
Basis in particular.
“We took data points after one and two months,” Dr. Guarente said of Elysium’s first clinical trial on Basis.
“It was amazing. It raised NAD+ just to youthful levels.”
Dr. Guarente also expressed optimism about improving healthy longevity.
“My view is that if we could stay alive and be healthy and vigorous longer, it’s an advantage,” he said.
“Unlike our bodies, which deteriorate as we get older, we acquire knowledge and become wiser. Cumulative knowledge is a valuable thing for society and the world.”

It’s safe to call 2025 the year of NAD+. Vogue writer Mattie Kahn reports that
“NAD+ is a common coenzyme that has become a target for algorithm-conscious wellness warriors and credentialed researchers alike”—including celebrities Hailey and Justin Bieber, Jennifer Aniston, and Joe Rogan. While scientific research supports the benefits of boosting NAD+ with oral supplements like
Basis, there’s one catch: Many are opting for "IV NAD+ drips," which lack scientific backing.
“IV drips are unnecessary and biologically do not make much sense, as there is no transporter to get the NAD+ molecule into the cells,” said Michael Sagner, M.D., director of the European Society of Preventive Medicine and a member of the Elysium Scientific Advisory Board. Another scientist interviewed put it even more bluntly:
“In very plain words, intramuscular and IV NAD+ intake is silly.”
Khan explores the legitimate science of NAD+ and NAD+ precursors with Shin-ichiro Imai, M.D., Ph.D., a postdoctoral mentee of Elysium chief scientist Leonard Guarente, Ph.D., now a professor at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Dr. Imai discusses the landmark paper he published with Dr. Guarente in 2000 that helped establish the link between NAD+, sirtuins, and aging. This research fueled the growth of NAD+ and longevity research, and eventually led to the founding of Elysium and development of

CNN and
Vogue aren’t the only ones going all-in on the science of NAD+ in 2025.
Essence writer India Espy-Jones left no stone unturned in an interview with Elysium chief scientist and renowned longevity researcher Leonard Guarente, Ph.D. They covered the essential role of NAD+ in our bodies (and decline with age), Dr. Guarente’s pioneering NAD+ and sirtuins research, the growing field of longevity science, and more. Like
Vogue, the
Essence story also points out that the best way to enjoy the benefits of boosting NAD+ is by taking oral supplements with the NAD+ precursors NR (Basis) and NMN (Signal)—not IV infusions. NAD+ itself is a large molecule, and charged, so it doesn’t get into cells.
“There is a great deal of research in humans supporting the safety and efficacy of oral supplementation with NAD+ precursors—NR and NMN—to increase NAD+ levels,” Dr. Guarente said.

Have you ever wondered why white bread and sugary yogurts can say “healthy” on the packaging? Past FDA rules defined nutritional quality based on levels of single nutrients, creating loopholes for fortified junk foods while excluding high-fat and nutritious whole foods like avocados. That all changes with a new FDA ruling. The new guidelines shift the focus from single nutrients to overall food quality, meaning that truly healthy foods now qualify—whole fruits, vegetables, fatty fish, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and lean proteins.
“It’s a terrific advance,” said
Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D., Dr.P.H., cardiologist and director of the Food is Medicine Institute at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, and member of the Elysium Scientific Advisory Board.
“For the first time, FDA will be judging foods not based on a handful of negative nutrients like calories or fat or salt, but on whether the food has healthy ingredients.”
