A MONTHLY UPDATE FROM INSIDE FIELD NOTES
Hi, it’s Jim from Field Notes. This is the third edition of our new monthly mail, containing a variety of stuff that doesn’t fit anywhere else. Please respond to this email if you have comments, questions, or suggestions.
TLDR Version: Sleuthing, Happy Hour, Boundary Waters, Live Stock, Joan, Mmm Coffee.

All right. Here’s the skinny on our impending Winter Limited Edition Release. Well, not the whole skinny. Actually, not even the part of the skinny that you’re probably most interested in. But it’s something anyhow. We’re going to debut our 61st Quarterly Edition next Wednesday, the 15th.

There’s a bit of randomness involved in the free Subscriber Bonus Item this time, so that’ll be fun. Also, subscribers will get a discount on a “related” item.

We frequently scan the online chatter before a product launch to see what folks think we’re going to do next, and TBH, we enjoy dropping hints to feed those discussions. But, we have learned from experience that no matter how obscure, confusing and convoluted our hints are, there is inevitably a moment when someone from the Crew posts in our HQ Slack, “Holy Crap, this person totally guessed the whole theme of the next edition!” If you have been that person in the past, congratulations. Know that you’ve inspired us to make our hints even weirder.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Notebooks
If you’re in Chicago, or can get here, we’re hosting a Winter Launch Happy Hour and Party next weekend at HQ. Friday, November 17th we’ll open at Noon, and from 4-8pm we’ll have drinks from our pals at Revolution Brewing, snacks from Big Delicious Planet and hopefully, a bunch of nerdy type, design, and printing conversations. We’ll also be open Saturday the 18th from 10am to 4pm with a vat of fresh-brewed coffee on hand.
Field Notes co-founder Aaron Draplin will be here both days. If you haven’t already, check out Aaron in one of our very first films, From Seed.

We get mail. “My husband and son and I took a canoe trip to the Boundary Waters a few weeks ago. I gave the boy one of your ‘Great Lakes’ Edition Notebooks. It sparked something for him. He went from just writing his name and little notes here and there to journalling about the whole trip – about animals we saw, meals, the tooth he lost. It was an amazing transformation. On the way home he ranked the most important things in his life: 1. ‘My Lake Superior Notebook,’ 2: ‘Mama and Papa,’ 3: ‘fun.’ I thought you would get a kick out of that. He just started First Grade.” Thanks for that, KP.

“It is a good idea to keep in touch, and I suppose that keeping in touch is what notebooks are all about … I think we are well advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not … Remember what it was to be me: that is always the point.” Joan Didion, “On Keeping a Notebook.”

It’s a brisk Fall day here in Chicago. Let’s warm it up with a quick photo contest. Take a shot of your current Field Notes and a cup of coffee, in a shop, outside, at your desk, or anywhere. Post the photo and tag us on Instagram, or send it to us in a reply to this email. We’ll randomly choose six nice ones and give those folks a Year-Long Subscription. (If you have an active subscription, we’ll tack a free year on the end of it.) The deadline for entry is Tuesday, 11/14, at midnight Chicago time. Good luck.

We hope you find this new Staple Day* Mailing format valuable and/or interesting. We hope to see you at the Winter Launch Events next weekend, but if you can’t make it in person, we have a few surprises coming soon online. Thanks for following along.
TTYS,

* Coined a long time ago in the Field Nuts Facebook group, “Staple Day” is traditionally observed when a writer reaches the exact middle of a Field Notes Memo Book, revealing the metal fasteners which bind the cover and the interior pages together.
