A MONTHLY UPDATE FROM INSIDE FIELD NOTES
Hi, it’s Jim from Field Notes. This is Edition 6 of our monthly mail which contains a variety of stuff that doesn’t really fit anywhere else. Please respond to this email if you have comments, questions, or suggestions.

Live from New York, It’s...

This SNL tour with Chloe Troast and Molly Kearney includes a quick shout out to Field Notes. The poster they are referencing was from a last-minute 2019 Holiday Market we hosted at HQ in Chicago, and seems like an appropriate message for the dressing room of a live show. Molly helped us out during that busy holiday season, including posting those up around the neighborhood, before they moved to LA and then NYC. Thanks Molly, of course we’re watching.

The Persistence of Memory
“I’m not writing it down to remember it later, I’m writing it down to remember it now.” The Field Notes tag line was something my grandfather Nels, an inveterate note taker, said to me as a way to explain how the physical act of handwriting a note helps to imprint the information in our memory.
A student taking lecture notes on a laptop can basically record the lecture verbatim, the words come in through the ears and go out through the fingers. Conversely, a student taking notes by hand needs to make editorial decisions as she is going along, deciding what are the important passages and conclusions. Not surprisingly, she’ll have a better understanding of the lecture and retain it longer.

Aside from our main Instagram account, we run an account called The Commons, where we reshare content from the Field Notes community, and periodically invite creatives, artists, writers, and/or generally exceptional people to take over the feed and share their work and tell their stories.
Or latest Creative in Residence at The Commons is Andrea Slusarski, also known as @drawingfromnature. We chatted with Andrea about how she got started, what inspires her, and of course, how she puts her Field Notes to use out in the field.

The following is the complete transcript of the idea meeting that resulted in the film we made to promote our 2018 Spring Quarterly Release, The “Coastal” Edition.
Me: “Do you suppose we could set up and shoot a time-lapse of the sun rising out of the Atlantic Ocean and then drive to the airport, fly to LAX, get to the beach, and shoot a time-lapse of the same day’s sun, setting into the Pacific?”

Steve and Bryan: “We’re down for that.”

In small type at the bottom of the inside back cover of just about every Field Notes Memo Book ever sold (that’s a lot of them), there’s a line of copy that asks “Tell us how you use your Field Notes. Please accompany your submission with a scan or photo of your page, with a brief description, to: pages@fieldnotesbrand.com.” We love receiving those mails, they frequently surprise us and inspire new product and feature ideas too. Keep them coming.

In honor of our sponsorship of the 20th Edition of the Morning News Tournament of Books that kicks off in March, let’s do a book recommendation contest. Take a photo of a novel you enjoyed recently, alongside a Field Notes. Post it to Instagram and tag us, or just mail it to pages@fieldnotesbrand.com. We’ll randomly choose ten winners and send them each a sold-out and rare 3-Pack from deep in The Archives. Get your entry in before Monday, 2/12.

PS: Watch for our annual custom ToB “Rooster” Memo Book and help us raise funds for children’s literacy.
You’ll hear from us next when the ToB Rooster Book drops and then in March with news about our Spring Limited Edition. That heads to press this week. We’re excited to work with an amazing partner on this one. The Subscriber Bonus Item is going to be fun, and perfect for the season too. Talk soon.

* Coined a long time ago in the Field Nuts Facebook group, “Staple Day” is traditionally observed when a writer reaches the exact middle of a Field Notes Memo Book, revealing the metal fasteners which bind the cover and the interior pages together.
