When BBC Radio proclaimed Toronto the world's most diverse city in 2016, it was a nod to the fact that over half of its approximately three million residents were born outside Canada. Thanks to pro-immigration policies and its role as the countryβs largest urban center, Toronto has become a magnet for many, turning it into North Americaβs third most-populated metropolis and one of the largest tech hubs in the world, up there with Silicon Valley and New York.
This Great Lakes favorite draws much of its dynamism from its 250-plus ethnic groups, with distinct neighborhoods and an ever-curious food scene. Like a permanent host city for an ongoing Olympics of arts and culture, it also attracts millions of revelers to festivals every year. Read more in Dika Lamβs Guide to Toronto.

Torontoβs energy comes from its contrasts: historic red-brick districts beside futuristic towers, car-free islands minutes from downtown, and festivals that spill into the streets all summer long. |
-
CN Tower: The 1,815-foot-tall, skyline-defining landmark with observation decks, a glass floor, and the EdgeWalk. Plus, the worldβs highest wine cellar at 360 The Restaurant.
-
Toronto Islands: This is where Torontonians themselves escape. A car-free archipelago a 15-minute ferry ride away, with beaches, bike paths, lagoons, and skyline views.
-
Distillery District: A preserved red-brick 19th-century distillery turned patio-lined hub of boutiques, cafΓ©s, galleries, and a charming holiday market in the winter.
-
501 Queen Street streetcar: Iconic transit line with access to Torontoβs most vibrant enclaves, including West Queen West, Graffiti Alley, Riverside, Leslieville, and Beaches.
-
Chinatown and Kensington Market: Start in the heart of Chinatown (corner of Spadina and Dundas) for noodles and bubble tea, then wander through Kensingtonβs murals, vintage shops, and globally inspired eats.

Toronto owes its name to βTkaronto,β Mohawk for "where there are trees standing in the water." In 1793, it became York, a British colonial capital nicknamed "Muddy York" for its notoriously sloppy streets.
Although tidy sidewalks, construction cranes, and glassy condos now dominate downtown, vestiges of Old Toronto survive. Learn about the Battle of York at Fort York, Canada's largest collection of War of 1812 buildings. It was here that 1,700 Americans sacked the town, inspiring the British to retaliate a year later by torching the White House.

Toronto may not have dozens of signature dishes, but it excels at embracing, reinventing, and elevating flavors from around the world. |
-
Peameal bacon sandwich: Torontoβs true original. Cured pork loin rolled in cornmeal and pan-fried crisp, best ordered on a bun with mustard at Carousel Bakery in St. Lawrence Market.
-
St. Lawrence Market: Speaking of, the historic food hall with 120+ vendors serves butter tarts, Portuguese pastΓ©is de nata, Montreal-style bagels, and international bites.
-
Global street eats in Kensington Market: A choose-your-own culinary adventure, from Mexican birria and Jamaican patties to Ojibway-style fry bread tacos and more.
-
Rooftop drinks: The Broadview Hotelβs terrace or Avlingβs rooftop farm-brewpub capture Torontoβs summer-at-golden-hour magic.
-
Festival food: Time your visit with Caribbean Carnival or Pride, and the streets themselves become your tasting menu.

Why visit Toronto in 2026 |
Going Software Engineer Alex Ausch says in our Where To Go in 2026 guide: Toronto has been leveling up for years, but in 2026 itβll all converge, with new US routes into YYZ; a FIFA spotlight; and a cultural calendar that doesnβt let up. The dining scene has exploded in recent years, thanks to new Michelin stars and Bib Gourmands. Foodies: Pay attention to Ossington Avenue, Little Portugal, and East Chinatown neighborhoods.
Time your visit right, and you can fold in one of Torontoβs festivals. Electric Island (May) is a techno series that draws international DJs over several weekends. Toronto Pride (June) is one of the largest Pride celebrations on the continent. Toronto Fringe (JuneβJuly) stages hundreds of indie performances. And the Toronto International Film Festival (September) turns the city into film central. Beyond the big names, the city shines through its hyper-local events, including street festivals in Queen West and Danforth, plus Pedestrian Sundays in Kensington Market.
World Cup energy will further supercharge the city in 2026. Its already lively neighborhoods will thrill whether you snag a ticket to one of the six matches or spectate from one of the fan zones. But even outside match days, thereβs no shortage of reasons to visit. |
