Portland wears a lot of nicknames—Stumptown, Rose City, Bridge City—and somehow they all fit. It’s a place where you can sip third-wave coffee in the morning, hike through old-growth forest in the afternoon, and end the night debating which food cart pod reigns supreme. Portland doesn’t try to be cool. It just is.
Here, murals bloom on the sides of old warehouses, bridges light up in neon at night, and locals will happily point you toward their favorite bike lane shortcut. It’s a little offbeat (catch the Unipiper, a guy who unicycles around town blowing fire out of his bagpipes), a little indulgent (craft beer on nearly every corner), and endlessly creative. And beyond all that, it’s also a launchpad for some of the most jaw-dropping nature in the Pacific Northwest. In Portland, the outdoors isn’t just a weekend activity—it’s baked into daily life.

In 1845, the two men who founded Portland each wanted to name it after his New England hometown. A coin toss decided, and Francis Pettygrove’s beloved city in Maine got its Pacific counterpart. If Asa Lovejoy had won, you’d be reading about Boston, Oregon, right now. (Fun fact: Both Lovejoy and Pettygrove are street names in Portland’s northeastern quadrant.)

Bites & brews
Portland’s food scene is as varied as it is delicious. Food cart pods, craft breweries, and James Beard–worthy restaurants often sit just blocks apart.
-
Food cart pods: Cartopia and Hawthorne Asylum are two of the most beloved clusters, serving everything from Korean-Mexican fusion to wood-fired pizza.
-
Coffee culture: Stumptown may be the best known, but locals swear by Coava and Heart.
-
Breweries: With more than 70 in the metro area, try Great Notion or Von Ebert for standout pours. Steeplejack is a testament to the city’s brewing finesse, and if hops are what you’re after, Breakside is the answer.
-
Ice cream: Salt & Straw is the city’s cult-favorite, though Kate’s and Fifty Licks have dedicated followings of their own.
-
James Beard winners: Le Pigeon (French-meets-Portland creativity) and
JinJu Patisserie (a sensory journey through pastries) have taken home titles in the city from which James Beard himself hails.

IMO, the best things in Portland are outside of downtown. Hit Gracie’s Apizza in the St. Johns neighborhood, and enjoy it on a blanket in Cathedral Park. Do a thrift crawl down Division or Hawthorne in trendy Southeast. Bonus: If you’re visiting Multnomah Falls, stop in Troutdale for a Sugarpine Drive-In waffle grilled cheese and build-your-own soft serve.

Get weird
Sure, Portland has world-class dining and pristine green spaces—but it also has a proudly quirky side that lives up to the bumper sticker slogan.
-
Powell’s City of Books: The world’s largest independent bookstore, spanning an entire city block
-
Portland Saturday Market: A long-running open-air market with local crafts, live music, and street food in Tom McCall Waterfront Park
-
Voodoo Doughnut: Touristy? Yes. Still worth it for the pink boxes and wild toppings? Also yes. Hit Blue Star, Doe, and/or Pip’s Original for donuts doubly worth the hype.
-
Lan Su Chinese Garden: An authentic Suzhou-style garden—right in the middle of downtown
-
Keep Portland Weird sign: Snap a photo at this iconic landmark across from Voodoo
