Location of the world's busiest airport. Home to OutKast. An ever-blue heart in a red state that's quickly turning purple. City of transplants.
Atlanta means something different to everyone, and that's an issue that often fragments this beautiful city. But everyone can agree: ATL has a whole lotta heart, y'all. Its streets are rich with history (despite the too-frequent tearing down of historic buildings), and while the nickname Hotlanta remains controversial among locals, its Southern charm doesn't.
The saying is that "Atlanta Influences Everything," and that's the truth, from music to culture to corporate (Coca-Cola, anyone?!). It takes time to get to know it, but this city may take you by surprise, just like that random eaten chicken wing on the sidewalk (yes, seriously, itβs a thing). Read more in Muriel Vegaβs Guide to Atlanta.

Murals and monuments, Civil Rights history, and 45 different neighborhoods to work your way through. A single trip to Atlanta likely wonβt be enough, but hereβs where to start your tour. |
-
Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park: The full arc of King's life in one walkable stretch, from his birth home to Ebenezer Baptist Church where he preached alongside his father and his final resting place.
-
The Atlanta BeltLine: A 22-mile multi-use trail threading through all 45 neighborhoods. Bike the Eastside Trail through Inman Park and Old Fourth Ward to Ponce City Market (the century-old former Sears building turned food hall) and Piedmont Park.
-
Atlanta History Center: Home to one of the last surviving Cycloramas, a 132-year-old, large-scale 3D painting depicting the Battle of Atlanta. A crucial stop on any Civil War/Civil Rights history tour.
-
Summerhill and Grant Park: Adjacent neighborhoods. The former one of Atlantaβs first neighborhoods, founded in 1865, now filled with repurposed storefronts. The latter home to the cityβs oldest surviving park and Zoo Atlanta. A window into what the city looked like before the sprawl.

Atlanta influences everything

Many associate Atlanta with OutKast and Ludacris, but the city's impact on the music industry goes beyond that. Today, itβs a thriving hip-hop hub, and some of the biggest names in the industry, like Future, 2 Chainz, Goodie Mob, and Childish Gambino, call it home.
The city has also played a crucial role in the rise of trap music (some consider it its birthplace), a genre that has taken the world by storm thanks to trailblazers like Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy. You'll also find other genres thriving here, from indie rock to R&B. To catch up-and-coming singer-songwriters, see a show at Eddie's Attic.

-
Big Softie: Soft-serve ice cream in a repurposed historic storefront on Summerhillβs Georgia Avenue (plus two other locations). A small, sweet, and perfect pit stop.
-
Halfway Crooks: Indie brewpub in Summerhillβs same historic block specializing in German, Czech, Belgian, and Celticβinspired beers. Stop by for a pintβ¦ or three.
-
Little Bear: A Bib Gourmand-recognized restaurant rounding out the Georgia Avenue stretch. Local, neighborhood-rooted, featuring a rotating menu of international dishes.
