San Diego sells itself on sunshine, but that’s only part of the story. It’s a city where Mexican-American heritage shapes the food, surf culture defines the rhythm of the day, and historic neighborhoods coexist with a booming, nationally recognized dining and craft beer scene.
Spend the morning wandering Spanish Colonial courtyards in Balboa Park, the afternoon hunting down the perfect fish taco, and the evening sipping a locally brewed IPA near the harbor. Come for the weather, but stay for the culture, the food, and the stories woven into every neighborhood. |

Sun, culture, and creativity—San Diego delivers it all. These highlights show why the city is much more than a beach town. (But don’t worry, the beach is never far from reach.) |
-
Balboa Park: The cultural heart of the city, home to Spanish Colonial architecture, world-class museums, lush gardens, and the famous San Diego Zoo—all spread across 1,200 acres.
-
Barrio Logan: A vibrant center of Chicano culture anchored by Chicano Park, where colorful murals under the Coronado Bridge tell stories of community, activism, and heritage.
-
Old Town San Diego State Historic Park: Considered the birthplace of California, a preserved district featuring adobe buildings, museums, and landmarks from the city’s earliest days.
-
Little Italy: Once the Tuna Capital of the World, this revitalized waterfront neighborhood is now a hub for markets, dining, piazzas, and live music.
-
Surf culture: From La Jolla’s Windansea Beach to breaks like Swami’s in nearby Encinitas, San Diego’s deep-rooted surf history is woven into daily life.

The cultural heart of San Diego
|
When the Panama Canal opened, San Francisco was chosen to host the opening ceremony, but San Diego—the first US port-of-call for ships sailing north in the Pacific—held its own exposition from 1915–1917. Balboa Park was the perfect venue. Built for the occasion, the park’s Mediterranean and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture includes the ornate California Building, the Spreckels Organ Pavilion (world’s largest outdoor pipe organ), and the Cabrillo Bridge. Now a National Historic Landmark, Balboa Park is larger than NY’s Central Park and home to the impressive San Diego Zoo, gardens, canyons, walking trails, and museums.

In San Diego, great food finds you—often wrapped in foil, served oceanside, or poured fresh from the tap. These local favorites capture the city’s easygoing approach to eating well. |
-
Fish tacos: A San Diego signature inspired by Baja California, featuring battered fish, cabbage, crema, and lime—best enjoyed post-beach or straight from a local taco stand. Mitch’s Seafood is a piping-hot local tip. Others: Seafood La 57, TJ Oyster Bar, and El Pescador Fish Market.
-
California burritos: A hearty local favorite stuffed with carne asada, French fries, and fiery salsa, found at beloved no-frills taco shops across the city, including Adalberto’s Mexican Food, Roberto’s, Super Sergio’s, or Harry’s Taco Club.
-
Craft beer: Officially the Craft Beer Capital of America, San Diego boasts more than 150 breweries, from pioneers like Karl Strauss and Ballast Point to neighborhood favorites.
-
Tuna Harbor Dockside Market: A Saturday-morning waterfront market where local fishermen sell freshly caught seafood directly to the public, including yellowtail, spot prawns, and lobster.
-
Little Italy Mercato and food halls: Weekly markets, gelato stops, and Italian eateries make this neighborhood one of the city’s best places to snack, sip, and linger.

Why visit San Diego in 2026 |
New routes from BOS on Southwest and DFW on Alaska Airlines make San Diego easier and cheaper to reach year-round.
Going contributing writer Keri Bridgwater says in her guide: With 17 miles of coastline and 250+ days of sunshine per year, San Diego is California’s perfect-weather getaway—but far from a one-note beach town. Located about as close to Mexico as you can get without crossing the border, it has a rich Mexican-American heritage, with influences evident across its architecture and culinary landscape. While its credibility as a foodie town has long been overshadowed by neighboring LA, local chefs, farms, and fishermen are fueling a now white-hot, more grown-up food scene that’s gaining nods from the Michelin and James Beard organizations.
Standout San Diego neighborhoods include upscale Mission Hills with its Craftsman-style homes and low-fi hipster enclave Golden Hill. Throw in hidden art hubs, peaceful gardens, world-class museums, and a generous slice of laid-back surf culture, and you’ve got yourself a weekend or longer fit for a good time. |
