A LETTER FROM OUR CO-FOUNDER EMILY MCCARTHY

People often ask me what it’s like to be in the CIA. I tell them that some parts live up to the movies, the adrenaline, the stakes, the moments when instinct takes over, but most of it is far quieter. Long stretches of typing up reports, surveillance detection routes, and endless hours listening and building trust with people.
During my year-long training at “The Farm,” I kept waiting for the kind of physical crucible I had imagined, like surprise 4:00AM wake-ups and long runs of unknown distance. There was a small crew of athletes and former military types who trained on their own, but most of my classmates stuck to the classroom. On weekends, when others left the base, I filled my downtime by practicing tradecraft and running through the pine forests of Camp Peary with a little daypack. I’d fill it with maps, notebook, food, water, and my old Blackberry phone and go for long runs with this little weighted pack. Little did I know at the time, but that pack, and the miles under it, became my first lessons in carrying weight with purpose.

At The Farm, I learned the importance of preparation, trust, and carrying your weight, literally and figuratively. Those lessons came with me into every mission, and eventually into GORUCK.
After years in the field, I learned that the tools you trust can change everything. And while I didn’t know it then, those early miles I logged at Camp Peary with a pack on my back were the first steps toward something that would be created years later: gear built for women on a mission.
The journey that started in 2001 has all led to this: the Spy Ruck, and the beginning of an entirely new journey. The Spy Ruck is sleek, stealthy, and secure. It hugs your body, stays silent, and moves as you move. The weight is balanced with odorless steel pellets. The padded shoulder straps and adjustable sternum strap relieve pressure, so you feel good mile after mile. And the reflective spearhead is a reminder that strength shines brightest in the dark.
It’s for everyone in our community…the seasoned ruckers as well as women who are just starting out. Because women have always “been on the mission.” Now their gear is, too.
