A few rucking tips from the center of the rucking universe
The rucks they issue you at Special Forces Assessment and Selection suck. I still have scars from ALICE way back when (thankfully chicks dig scars) - and when I was back at Camp Mackall, the current ones aren’t any better. I got to do an unknown time unknown distance ruck march, it was my kind of fun and the rub on my lower back made it really authentic in a way my Rucker could not have. Get the weight HIGH AND TIGHT and then Embrace the Suck.
A great rucking workout is to go until your t-shirt is completely and I mean 100% saturated in sweat. The feeling afterwards is unlike any other I’ve felt in any other activity. You take your ruck off and you can feel the blood flow bringing you back to full power again and it’s the perfect companion to the sense of accomplishment you get while you wring your shirt out. GLORIOUS!
Cold weather was always my crutch, but the heat will kill you, especially if you’re not used to it. There are very good, life-saving reasons why the Cadre dunk the candidates in the lakes on hot days. Now is a good time to ease into it before July and August are here. If you feel light-headed or dizzy, STOP and/or dial it back.
One mile is about 2,000 steps, so if your movement is 12 miles and you have weight on your back, that’s about 24,000 REPS toward getting stronger. When you like that feeling, keep chasing it. Rucking is the way.
If my enemy got to select either my rucksack or my boots, I would let him select my rucksack. I’ll pick my own boots! I saw a ton of MACV’s (with merino socks - a must) out there with Cadre and candidates. I wore my Mackalls, which have the same foundational support.
If you’re into rucking a lot, running shoes don’t work that great. They’re like mattresses these days and they’re not built for rucking (or walking for that matter). We build ours from the ground up for RUCKING.
