In 2008, I was still in Special Forces and I had emily’s idea for GORUCK in my head, but I didn’t know how to start. I watched some Youtube videos on backpack design (free) and I put an ad in Craigslist NYC (free) for a “Backpack Designer”. As fate would have it, the economy was in some flux and a great couple with a lot of experience was out of work and freelancing. They quoted me a price of $4,049 to design and build ~5 samples of what would become GR1. It was the steal of the century, one of the last for me, anyway 🙂. Without their hard work and advice, without GR1 as it became, GORUCK would not exist. My heart and soul is entirely in that ruck, and I’m very proud of it.

BUT, GR2
Sky was his name, and he lived in Big Sky Country and he told me you can’t launch a real brand with only one rucksack. So what started as GR1 became the skeleton of a line of rucks. GR2 became my personal favorite and I traveled all over the world with that ruck. My buddies still in Special Forces liked all the pockets and the compartments, especially the demolition guys — because you could easily separate out the charges from the blasting caps, and it laid flat like a medical pack, which we all really liked. This is the ruck that made packing fun.

GR3 - this began as a 40L GR1 (I still have and use the sample), but it is so vastly different that we sized it up to fill the carry on bin and max it out. I hate roller bags, they make that horrific sound on cobblestone and they don’t roll on dirt paths, and I wanted the ability to carry more, and all I had, on my back. If you have to travel with a second (large) pair of shoes, and maybe a bunch of your kids’ stuff, too -- GR3 works great. This one is for the lazy stuff-it-in-and-go kind of packer. Sometimes, I’m guilty as charged.

BOMBPROOF LAPTOP COMPARTMENT
These rucks all have one - it started out as a bladder compartment like the assault packs I had in Special Forces, but next to your back is a bad place to put those because they get lumpy. Much better is to put your $$ laptop there, in its own place. Easy in, easy out. The easy life may not be for us, but this kind of easy is the best ever built for this purpose.
