I believe that the most American place on earth is in Normandy, France—where, 82 years ago this June, the 82nd Airborne jumped in behind enemy lines, seized bridges and roadways, and held back German forces so the beach landings could succeed. More than 10,000 Americans never left those shores, and the American Cemetery is a must visit.
Emily and I are going this year with our three kids. You’re invited to join us June 2-6 (D-Day). We and the Cadre have a bunch of different events of all distances and difficulties, and it’s a lot more fun there with more of us, but Normandy itself and the survivors are the real draw. To see them there, and for our kids to meet them, has been such a highlight of our lives. Pro tip - if you bring ‘em a beer, they’ll likely drink it! (pics below).
In the off chance that your kids like baseball, bring their gloves. Our boys are always looking to play America’s pastime, especially in the most American place on earth.
