Today is the only day of the year that doubles as an order. Not March 4th—March Forth.
At GORUCK, we’re all in on that mindset. But there’s a deeper tie-in: on this day in 2008, I applied for the trademark on the word “GORUCK.”
For the next six months, we lived in limbo. If the USPTO said no, we didn’t have a brand. We loved the word because it was a command: GO… RUCK. The name came from the "go-rucks" we kept in the trunks of our Humvees in Iraq—bags filled with extra ammo and supplies in case our vehicle was disabled and we had to fight on foot. Some guys called them “go-bags,” but that didn't have the same ring. When Emily told me in Abidjan, “You should do the GORUCK thing,” the command sounded good enough to jump in. And we did.
The Mission: To commemorate this annually, we’re calling for 4 miles of MARCH FORTH x GORUCK. The Goal: 4 miles in 1 hour (15 min/mile pace). That’s a solid benchmark pace, and a good goal. If you don’t hit it this year, keep after it.
The Weight: 20 lbs is the standard starting point.
The Rule: There isn't one. If you want to go heavier, do it. Lighter? Do it.
Rucking is open to everyone. There’s no requirement to carry 100 lbs and no requirement to be in the military. We just believe in an active world, connected to our friends and neighbors through motion.
This March Forth, GO RUCK. Thank you for the support. Now go get after it.

P.S. Pictured above is the first “go-ruck” I put together for emily in Abidjan, an old Special Forces medical pack that became the primary inspiration for our Built in the USA GR2 (pictured in black).
As for rucking 4 miles in an hour, I’m going to use a Ruck Plate Carrier (RPC) that I keep by the door, with 45#. Here’s the gear that’s BUILT TO RUCK.
MARCH FORTH
"Kind of like “May the Fourth Be with Us”, but cooler! Yes, I said it."
