For my birthday earlier this week, I received two gifts in one: a present wrapped in a puzzle box that took me the better part of the morning and a wee bit of the afternoon to unlock. Great for people who like escape rooms (me), Rian Johnson movies (also me), and diligently completing every puzzle in the NYT app before allowing myself to actually start the day (100% me).

It’s my bimonthly note suggesting you try and/or subscribe to Dawn. Our THCV-rich tincture has helped me with energy and focus for years now, especially once I had a kid. I actually cut out coffee for the week when I was in Las Vegas recently and relied solely on Dawn to fight my laziness and desire not to leave my plush king-size bed. I’m happy to report it worked and I didn’t get any headache-type symptoms of coffee withdrawal. And that’s been my bimonthly note suggesting you try and/or subscribe to Dawn.

Put a little pep in your Saturday step by watching this utterly charming short video from filmmaker Ben Christensen, featuring his daughter Milo and her local Arizona dance troupe kicking it to Don Williams’ “Tulsa Time.” I’m now this close to buying myself a pair of Wranglers. (No, it’s not an ad.)

If you are in L.A. or have plans to be there any time soon, go see artist Henry Curchod's new show at C L E A R I N G Gallery. “Rome is no longer in Rome” opens tonight and features 14 new works from the Iranian-American artist. Curchod’s pieces make use of pastel, charcoal, paint, and mixed media to explore the relationships between Western capitalism and Eastern culture, individual creation and artificial production, and ambition and populism. (If you’re in New York, I’m hoping to go see Xingzi Gu’s ethereal figures, on display at C L E A R I N G’s Williamsburg outpost until June 21st.)

Until this past weekend, I was blissfully unaware that cannabis bonsai plants—or cannabonsai—were a thing. Now I’m desperate to have one. I came across this post on Reddit with eight different strains grafted onto a bonsai mother plant and was stunned by how cool this is on both a horticultural and stoner level. I’ve since gone down the rabbit hole, including a subreddit (r/CannaBonsai), a book, and a YouTube channel. Just super cool stuff all around. Also, I should note, there’s a little piece of my brain that’s telling me that I did in fact already know about cannabonsai and maybe even wrote about it years ago. Some memory loss is part of the trouble of being a writer and getting older. Also the weed.

Speaking of weed, as part of International Seaweed Day, The Explorers Club here in New York is holding a screening of Seaweed Stories on Wednesday, June 4th at 1 PM. Narrated by (kelp) Forest Whitaker, the documentary delves deep into the stories of those who are working hard to shine a light on the exciting possibilities that seaweed offers us, from food sustenance to a natural alternative to plastic. Though I’ve yet to inform Verena that I’m taking a half-day, I’ll be attending the screening, so hope to see some of you there. We can celebrate the Knicks’ Game 7 victory together in person.
