I’m a big, big fan of illustrator and Gossamer contributor María Medem, so I was excited to hear she has a new book out called Rainbow. However, as I’m a superficial person, I was probably even more excited to discover that she, in collaboration with Fidèle, also has a sweatshirt out as part of the book release. The Paris-based small press and printing studio makes a lot of cool things, so even if Medem’s work doesn’t speak to you as much as it does me, you should definitely take a look at their other offerings.

I live a short walk from Pearl Street Caviar in Red Hook, which means I’ve accidentally become the kind of person who keeps a tin of caviar in the fridge “just in case.” And honestly, it’s a habit I recommend adopting, especially during the holidays, when a spoonful of something salty and glossy has the ability to make any meal feel a little more celebratory. (For what it’s worth, friends in hospitality whose taste I trust have quietly confirmed what I’ve always suspected: Pearl Street’s caviar is genuinely excellent, and the price is refreshingly sane for the quality.)

I spotted this antique sterling silver tabletop cigarette holder by Asprey & Co. thanks to Hauteville (an account and newsletter worth following). It’s a shame the ones I could find cost at least $7,500, because otherwise I would love to have this sitting in my house. Maybe one of you has some money (and cigarettes/joints) burning a hole in your pocket.

I don’t care that Zootopia 2 passed $900M in under two weeks, not enough people are talking about this film. It’s not only better than the original—which, honestly, I thought was just pretty good—it’s one of the best action movies of the 21st century. There, I said it. When I went with my son the other day, I made a mental note of how odd it was that there were so many childless people in the theater. It seemed like a very strange choice for a date. But by the time the credits rolled, I understood. I’m not a Pixar hater and I enjoyed all their recent movies, even the ones that have been met with mixed reception (except Moana 2, which should’ve stayed a Disney+ show or whatever it was supposed to be instead of a cash-grab, and I guess also Elio, which was not good), but Zootopia 2 is a reminder of how animated films used to be edgy and funny and chock full of references that go way over kids’ heads but still charm the whole family. Anyway, if Reddit is to be believed, there are many people who disagree with my take, but they don’t write this newsletter, so you’re stuck with me.

I’ve written before that there is no better pancake than one made from Wegman’s boxed mix. There is, however, one exception: Chez Ma Tante’s butter-fried, crispy-edged golden discs. The catch is that they’re restaurant pancakes, found at Greenpoint’s near-perfect-for-any-occasion Chez Ma Tante. But I was recently reminded that the New York Times has a recipe for these tasty breakfast cakes, should you want to really lean in one Sunday morning during the holidays. The accompanying Instagram Reel might be helpful for you to reference just how deeply fried in clarified butter they are. I’m also convinced that the real-deal restaurant version has some sort of light citrus component (lemon zest?), but do with that what you will.
