As someone whose favorite Simpsons quote is “I’d like another Fabergé egg, please” (and who learned about the existence of Fabergé eggs from said show), I’ve always been vaguely interested in the craft. So I was intrigued to see this piece by Serena Kutchinsky about her father’s quest to build the biggest jeweled egg in the world—and how it led to ruin and misfortune. There are a million amazing bits to it, including a theft, a Concorde flight with the jeweled prize in its own seat under the name Mr. Egg, and—why not?—cameos from Donald Trump and Prince Andrew. But ultimately it’s a tragic tale of obsession and its impact on a family, and worth a read if you have a bit of time.

I love any game that involves matching, organizing, or identifying colors. I think one of my earliest ever High Praise recs was for Blendoku, way back in 2017. Color Game is a simple desktop game that measures how good or bad you are at recalling hues. (Apparently our brains are remarkably bad at remembering color.) You can play by yourself, with friends, or try a Wordle-style daily option where your acuity for a given set of five colors is measured against everyone else’s. Not to brag, but I think I’m pretty good at this. (I haven’t tried hard mode yet.)

Speaking of Wordle, its creator Josh Wardle has a new game out. Parseword (clever name!) is a take on the cryptic crossword, a popular British style in which each word of the clue does double duty as an instruction to solving it. (You can see why the name works on so many levels.) The game is fun and a great way to get into cryptics if you’re crossword-curious, as is this accompanying New Yorker story timed to its release.

We’ve got another new addition to the site: Rose Los Angeles’ Deeper Sleep Delights, which offer a 10mg complement to their best-selling 2mg and 5mg Deep Sleep options. Made with tart cherry, passionflower, and a hint of vanilla, these herby-sweet chews hit heavy thanks to indica-dominant flower rosin, 4mg of CBD, and naturally occurring melatonin.

I never thought I’d be recommending a cabbage recipe, but here we are. Fast, foolproof, and delicious, this sauteed cabbage recipe from Love & Lemons has shockingly become a healthy go-to in recent months. Don’t knock it ‘til you try it!

This is the type of photography I love. Or at least one of the types. (I don’t want to pigeonhole myself.) I could spend days looking at highly detailed images of how stuff is made, runs, performs, or decays. Christopher Payne’s photographs now on display at The Cooper Hewitt Museum really scratch that itch. In his large-scale photos of factories from around the U.S., Payne captures the creation of anything from flags to footballs, and musical instruments to pinball machines. They’re images you can just get lost in, especially with the right edible.
