Nine years ago, I walked into the Sun Room of the North Rim’s Grand Canyon Lodge and immediately burst into tears. We were nearing the end of a two-week road trip around the southwest that included a night at The Lightning Field, pitstops at Arcosanti and Pie Town, N.M., and hikes through some of the most breathtaking landscapes imaginable. And still, the scale and extraterrestrial beauty of the Grand Canyon as seen through the Lodge’s famous picture windows stunned me. I was reminded of that view and those particular windows while reading this piece about the devastation of the North Rim by last summer’s Dragon Bravo fire, which consumed more than 150,000 acres of the Kaibab plateau and annihilated the lodge as we know it. River guide and writer Kevin Fedarko recently became one of the first journalists to see the burn zone firsthand. His account, along with photos and videos by Renan Ozturk, offers a stark portrait of the damage, while also contextualizing it within the scope of the Grand Canyon’s history.

I’m not here to introduce you to a vegetable (I know, I know—it’s technically a fruit). Instead, I’m here to tell you that I think we’re about to be seeing more of these crunchy-sweet, thin-skinned peppers on menus and hopefully in at-home recipes, too. They say three’s a trend and there’s definitely something in the New York City water (other than whatever it is that makes our bagels and pizza dough so singularly perfect) because I’ve now spotted them at several different restaurants. First, at Red Hook newcomer Third Time’s A Charm, where they’re an intoxicatingly bright antidote to the otherwise deliciously rich Cold “Carbonara.” You might also see them at Lei Wine Bar and Theodora (assuming you can get a reservation), where they’ve been a seasonal topping for the mackerel toast. I’m looking forward to experimenting with pickling some of my own and peppering them into a tuna melt.

While I appreciate how put-together an athleisure set can look, I’ve been gravitating more and more to threadbare cotton tees and my oldest, nubbiest Lycra-free leggings. H-O-R-S-E, a new(ish) line of loose-fitting workout classics designed by Sue Williamson, offers a refreshing alternative to an otherwise endless sea of coordinated spandex. I’ve had my eye on the Track Pant for a while now but will be adding a pair of the Big Shorts to my basket before summer arrives.

I’m certain they do, and that’s not just the mushrooms talking. But I’m looking forward to hearing an expert’s perspective from scientist and Professor of Forest Ecology Dr. Suzanne Simard at this Pioneer Works Q&A celebrating her new book, When the Forest Breathes. RSVP is free, and the evening’s programming includes a lesson in decoding tree rings, stargazing, and a soundtrack courtesy of Mort Garson.
