The Products GQ’s Wellness and Grooming Director Is Using Right Now |
You might have heard that the same unusually warm weather I’ve had here in the West is coming to the rest of the United States. This has made March—a time that’s typically been about thawing out slowly—feel like a quick shock to the system. No sooner was I changing my clocks than I was inhaling the smell of jasmine, lathering on sunscreen, and posting up by a pool. In 90-degree weather, there’s no other option but to melt. It’s simultaneously thrilling and unnerving to experience the concentrated energy of summer so early in the year. But uncertainty seems baked into the seasons (and the news cycle) these days. That’s probably why many of the products I found myself drawn to this month were those that helped me reclaim the small rituals that come with the traditional calendar year, while also helping me embrace the sunny, verdant outdoors fully moisturized, protected, and ready to move.

Once upon a time, you could only find this excellent face sunscreen in Greece. It was one of those mythical easy-to-apply European formulas that people squirreled away in bulk while on a Mediterranean vacation. That all changed this month when Korres debuted a US version of the product. Everyone’s skin tone is different, but compared to other 100% mineral filter products, it glides on really well and doesn’t leave a chalky white cast on my (albeit light) complexion. That said, it’s not an exact replica of the Greek formula. All the more reason we need the recent FDA proposal that would upgrade US sunscreens to be accepted, ASAP.
2. D.S. & Durga Debaser in Bloom |
I had the chance to catch up with David Seth Moltz (the nose and D.S. of D.S. & Durga) here in L.A. just after a stretch of rain when the city’s plentiful flora were all blooming. To hear him excitedly describe all the scents of different native plants and shrubbery lining the streets was a reminder of the passion he puts into each of the fragrance brand’s bottles. His latest concoction, a flowery remix of the figgy fan favorite Debaser, manages to intertwine memories of Pixies cassette tapes with bright, garden-forward notes of gardenia, rosemary, and white current. It’s far sweeter than the fragrances that are typically in my rotation but I’ve found myself welcoming it as a nice, playful shift to match the intoxicating feeling of spring.
