Depending on your personal loyalties, the trouncing the Patriots received last night at the hands of the Seahawks may well have overshadowed the spectacular pageantry of the halftime show. But if you were there for the music, the commercials, and the watches, you were well served.
If you paid close attention to the wedding scene during Bad Bunny’s performance, you might have noticed a sparkly new timepiece on his wrist (and it wasn’t the immaculate Cartier Crash he wore to the Super Bowl LX press conference last week). Indeed, the ink was barely dry on the press release for Audemars Piguet’s recent mega-drop of new watches when the Puerto Rican superstar performed in front of some 125 million people. Debuting last week in Andermatt, the Royal Oak Selfwinding with malachite dial is available in both 37mm and 41mm versions, and the former appeared beneath the cuff of Bunny’s white Zara suit.
A sequel of sorts to the turquoise versions introduced in 2023, it boasts a yellow gold case with the Royal Oak’s signature integrated bracelet, octagonal bezel, and automatic cal. 5909 movement. The star of the show, however, is its face, which keeps the stone dial trend of the past few years going strong with a slice of green malachite. As with other stone dials, each malachite dial is slightly different, with unique striations in its crystalline structure, and appears deeper or lighter in tone depending on the copper content in the stone.
The choice of the new malachite dial was no accident, of course. Bunny’s stylist, Storm Pablo, was on the hunt for a timepiece that would tie the singer’s halftime outfit together, and the Royal Oak was an easy choice. “The Super Bowl is such a major moment, it only made sense to turn to Audemars Piguet,” he said. “When building this look, we focused on finding a watch that aligned seamlessly with the style identity we’ve curated. The deep green malachite dial paired with yellow gold added a unique, elevated edge to the classic timepiece. It felt symbolic of Bad Bunny’s style and a perfect fit.” We concur.
