METALLICA: LIVE ON HALLOWEEN 1983
This week’s filthy, exhumed hidden treasure is a cassette tape featuring one of the earliest soundboard recordings of the band. With Metallica fresh off the Kill ‘Em All for One tour, this ghoulish gig was recorded live at The Keystone in Palo Alto in a room full of Bay Area bangers decked out in their best King Diamond face paint.
The night proved to bring few tricks, but many treats, as the boys premiered four songs in front of this lucky audience. Debuts of “Fight Fire with Fire,” “Ride the Lightning,” and the first full live version of “The Call of Ktulu” (then known as “When Hell Freezes Over”) all set the stage for a raw, wild rendition of what would become a setlist staple heard by more than 1600 crowds: “Creeping Death.”

Quebec Magnetic
You’ll be more familiar with our second Halloween throwback; it was recorded over two nights at Colisée Pepsi in Quebec City on October 31 and November 1, 2009, for Quebec Magnetic, Metallica’s first release on their own Blackened Recordings label.
With 26 different songs performed across the two nights of filming, the production ended up with more content than could fit in the main feature. And thus, the eight songs not played on November 1 were added as bonus tracks. The video of “Seek & Destroy” remains a highlight that we love to share on Halloween, thanks to the four masked maniacs on stage performing it!
In honor of Halloween week, Maximum Metallica is bringing you all 26 songs (that’s over three hours!) of Quebec Magnetic.
