As relentless stag parties descend on Prague and Budapest, those wanting a slightly less debauched experience should head north to Riga – the Baltic's best-kept secret.
Europe's finest collection of Art Nouveau architecture (UNESCO protected an entire district), medieval merchants' houses, and Soviet-era monuments all coexist in one walkable city. And if you do want a night out, the local Black Balsam herbal liqueur has been curing hangovers (usually after causing them) since 1700.
With just 600,000 residents, Riga feels easily "knowable". The massive Central Market – housed in five repurposed German Zeppelin hangars – serves up everything from Baltic smoked fish to artisan rye bread. And unlike its southern neighbours, summer twilights here stretch on, and on, and ooooon.
Our tip: time your visit for the Song and Dance Festival (every five years, next in '28) when 40,000 performers in traditional dress take over the city. Eurovision meets folk tradition.

Those in the know say that Lima is one the most beautiful cities in South America – if not the most beautiful.
Wedged between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes, it's certainly hard to compete with topographically. Its cuisine is also world-class, particularly if you're a fan of fish and/or hot chilli. Head to Cevichería Beto Chorrillos for some of the best ceviche in Lima.
When you've had enough of strolling along the Malecón, the city's clifftop boardwalk, check out Museo Larco for an incredible glimpse into the pre-Columbian societies of the Andes. Our tip: everyone raves about the fancy Miraflores district, but don't miss Barranco for a more laid-back vibe.

Thoroughly eclipsed by nearby Bali, Yogyakarta (in southern Java) is a true diamond in the rough. Its ancient pedigree, extensive Hindu temples, and Muslim Sultan make it a cultural melting pot – and of all cities in the archipelago, it offers one of the most authentic glimpses into the Indonesian way of life.
Whatever you do, don't give yourself 24 or 48 hours to "tick off" the city's sights. It's one of those places best enjoyed slowly, deeply (madly?), and without a particular destination in mind. Amble through the morning markets; check out the colonial sugar factory; and don't forget to try some delicious nasi liwet.
Our tip: make the trip to nearby Kaliurang for some fresh (albeit pretty volcanic) air.

"Offers amazing range of motion and comfort while providing quick access to all your gear. It has enough compartments to keep all of your things nicely organized. Did I mention it also looks good :) hands down my favorite bag!"
