Congrats to Jerry, our latest survey winner!
"My favorite place in the world is the mountains of southwest Virginia and western North Carolina. A cascading series of ancient ranges from the Cumberland to the Smokies to the Blue Ridge, filled in with forests, rivers, canyons, and waterfalls. I love skiing and hiking the West, but the Appalachians are home."

- Booker Prize nominees write from cemetery benches, kitchen tables, and bare desks, proving creativity doesn't require an ergonomic setup.
- Digital nomads swear by AirTags in every checked bag, cable organizers to end the pocket tangle, and water filters that make Mumbai hostel tap water drinkable.
- Nigeria's birth rate just overtook Europe's (all of it!) for the first time in modern history.

(Warning: multilingual swearing below!)
Did you know Germans have a word for "person allergic to intelligence" (intelligenzallergiker) and use "testicle goblin" (hodenkobold) for someone annoying?
When researchers asked people worldwide to list every taboo word they knew, Germans averaged 53 while English and Spanish speakers managed a paltry 16. All hail the Germanic penchant for compound words!
Italians took a different route: 17 different variations of what translates as "fucking God," perhaps reflecting their proximity to the Vatican. Meanwhile "shit" topped charts in English, Finnish, and Italian but barely registered in French or German.
Before you write off the value of such words: swearing helps with pain! People holding their hand in ice water lasted longer when cursing. Try it sometime.

In 2021, America's biggest metros lost 900,000 residents. Where'd they go? Small towns.
Places under 30,000 people went from losing 25,000 residents in 2019 to gaining 125,000 in 2021. Prime-age workers moved to counties most have never heard of: Comal County, Texas. Dawson County, Georgia. Broadwater County, Montana.
The wage premium for big cities has dropped 43% since the pandemic. That Brooklyn salary looks less impressive when your Boise colleague earns nearly the same while paying 70% less in rent.
San Francisco and LA have lost 15% of kids under five. This article's argument: cities are doubling down on what it believes are very things that drove people away in the first place.

The ice cream truck has survived sanitation scares, health raids, and lethal turf wars. In 1984, Glasgow's Ice Cream Van Wars ended with arson: six dead, including an 18-month-old. Two men served 20 years before their convictions were overturned. The trucks weren't drug fronts — they were just profitable, selling everything from cigarettes to chocolate in housing estates without corner shops.
Today's threats are gentler: emission zones, idling concerns, rising costs. The response? Whitby Morrison now builds all-electric trucks. TikTok sellers make $13.50 "cold trays" with nine sauces. And 76-year-old drivers still show up several days a week, because everyone leaves smiling.
