Dear Friend,
Tomorrow is Shark Awareness Day—a chance to celebrate these remarkable animals and reflect on their importance to ocean ecosystems.
Right now, approximately one-third of all shark species are facing extinction, mostly due to overfishing, habitat degradation, and other human activities. If we lose these apex predators, we will lose an essential part of the marine food web, with potentially catastrophic consequences.
To date, the National Geographic Society has funded more than 750 ocean-focused projects, including projects focused on safeguarding and researching sharks, and has helped protect millions of square kilometers of ocean through Explorer-led programs. |

One of the world’s most endangered sharks is the whale shark, which grows as large as a bus and can weigh 20 tons or more. These underwater giants have proven surprisingly difficult to study, which is why National Geographic Explorer and marine biologist Brad Norman is trying a different approach: citizen science.
With help from volunteer schoolkids, tourists, and divers who provided photos, Brad and his colleagues built a database of thousands of images and sightings they can use to identify individual whale sharks. It’s a great example of the innovative ways National Geographic Explorers find to illuminate and protect our planet.
