Dear Friend,
Bertie Gregory could barely believe his eyes.
The National Geographic Explorer was observing a colony of 10,000 emperor penguins on the Antarctic Peninsula when he saw a line of chicks splitting off from the group. He launched a drone to follow them — and what he saw amazed him.
“One by one they started to jump off this 50-foot ice cliff to take their first swim in the Southern Ocean,” he recalls. “To my amazement, they were not just surviving, but popping up and going ‘I can swim!’”
Behavior like this has never been recorded before. It’s exactly the kind of discovery that drives Explorers like Bertie — and inspires caring people like you and me.
Please help ensure work like this continues by joining the National Geographic Society as a Contributing Member today. With a gift of a gift of $35 or more, we’ll also send you a free gift: a limited-edition cotton tote with a beautiful image of two penguins!
