Hey there,
Kenji here. I’m writing to you from my kitchen, where the new Rice Cooker I designed with Our Place is probably the most-used tool.
I grew up in a Japanese household where rice wasn’t just a side dish; it was the foundation of nearly every meal. Now that I have kids of my own who would happily eat it every single day, I’ve realized that getting it right matters more than we often admit.
For years, I’ve seen two extremes: cheap cookers that leave you with a crusty bottom and uneven grains, or overly technical machines that feel like you’re operating a spaceship. When I started talking with the team at Our Place, I wanted to see if we could build something that lived right in the middle—a tool that was incredibly precise but felt easy to use and intuitive.
We took over a year testing and refining this from the ground up. I wanted to ensure it delivered consistently light, distinct, never-mushy grains across every type. To do that, we used Fuzzy Logic sensors that continuously adjust heat and timing throughout the cycle. It’s a "hands-off" approach that eliminates the uneven results you get with some other cookers.
What I love about the final result isn't just the tech, though—it’s the consistency. Whether it’s white rice, brown rice, quinoa, or morning oats, or even a frittata (yes, I tried this!), it just works. It has simple controls, a Delay Timer that’s remarkably convenient for busy schedule, and a Keep Warm setting that holds the rice at temperature until the rest of the family is finally ready to sit down.
It’s a beautifully designed tool that brings a bit more ease to the most important part of my table. I hope it’ll do the same for you.
Happy cooking,
Kenji López-Alt
