Goodbye, 2025 👋
Before we rush into declaring new hopes and goals for 2026, join us in saying goodbye to these ideas and habits that we're leaving behind.
|
- Let’s start with the obvious one: content that’s fast, empty, and everywhere all at once. We’re saying 'BYE!' to AI slop that exists just to fill space. What we’re keeping? Thoughtful tools that support real creative work—helping us research, refine, and experiment without replacing taste, voice, or intention.
- Next up: doomscrolling! If your thumb did more work than your imagination this year, you’re not alone. In 2026, we’re choosing more intentional feeds—following creators who share progress, not just perfection—and saying 'BYE!' to comparing our behind-the-scenes to someone else's highlight reel.
- On that, another thing we're leaving behind? Waiting until we're "ready". Messy drafts, rough sketches, half-formed ideas—that’s where growth lives. This year, we’re leaning into practice, play, and even learning, out loud.
- And finally, the idea that rest has to be earned. We’re stepping away from grind-for-grind’s-sake thinking and officially kissing hustle culture goodbye. Creative work doesn’t thrive on constant output. It thrives on balance, breathing room, and breaks that aren’t treated like rewards, but as part of the process.

So here’s to a new year of creating with intention. Less noise. More curiosity. Less pressure. More joy.

As we usher in a new year of creative possibility, Skillshare Top Teacher Cat Coquillette breaks down the visual trends poised to influence illustration, surface design, and creative work in 2026. Grounded in industry insight and cultural shifts, this report offers a forward-looking lens on what’s gaining traction—and why. Whether you’re planning new projects or simply exploring what’s next, these trends reveal where creative expression is heading. Highlights include:
|
- Embracing Analog-Driven Imperfections: Bold, imperfect brushstrokes and wobbly handlettering ("Painterly Marks" and "Naive Hand Lettering") which celebrate the unmistakable touch of the artist's hand.
- The Art of Trend Evolution: Favorites from past years—like mushrooms, scallops, and quilts—evolve into whimsical new motifs, helping artists stay ahead while building on proven styles.
- Maximalism in Nature: Dense, vibrant florals and lush aquatic scenes fill the canvas with immersive, high-energy compositions.
🔮 PS. Cat also has a class on how you can better predict upcoming trends, check it out here.
