There’s a serious influx of new-season bottles rolling through the Sometimes Always cellar. It’d be negligent to let this steady stream slip by unnoticed. So we’ve pulled together a tight round-up of winemakers—back with fresh releases, and very much still delivering.
A label that harks back to the glory days of Italian table wine. Steve Crawford and Carlo Jensen think that wine should be nothing too serious—made for pleasure, social lubrication and mangia mangia mangia. The entire winemaking process is conducted by hand (likely with the help of some friends paid in mortadella). They’re not ‘fine wines’ to be pondered over. Just well-made plonk to be drunk with much joy and gusto. You’ll find that their latest release does just that.
Sparkling’s meant to be saved, or so we’re told. DAOSA isn’t—get this bubbly beauty out of the bottle and start enjoying your life. Up in Piccadilly Valley, Lucy and Xavier are working with fruit that doesn’t need much convincing. Planted in the mid-90s, these vines still very much pulling their weight. No need to dress it up. It’s already doing all the talking.
Negrette, served three ways. Silky and perfumed, this stealthy variety from the cool, wet west of France has a habit of winning people over. Just north of Toulouse, Diane and Philippe Cauvin are bringing it back into the light—after it fell on the brink of extinction. Old Fronton vines—some pushing 70 years—these are France’s rarest vines at your fingertips.
