Melvins are an American rock band formed in Montesano, Washington in 1983 by then high-school students Buzz Osborne, Matt Lukin and Mike Dillard (replaced by Dale Crover shortly after). Osborne and Crover have remained members since 1984, joined by a revolving cadre of bassists. At their outset, Melvins mixed elements of Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, and Kiss with high-speed hardcore punk. Black Flag’s My War – the 1984 sophomore studio album which rounds out with three six-minute plus tracks that sound more like gloomy metal than snarling hardcore – proved particularly influential on the nascent Melvins. In 1987, Melvins released their debut full-length album Gluey Porch Treatments, prior to relocating to San Francisco. By 1991’s Bullhead, the band had begun to crystalize their unique take on drone and noise rock. Melvins have long been credited for pioneering Seattle’s grunge sound in the late 1980s, blazing an indelible trail for bands like Mudhoney, Soundgarden, and longtime friends, Nirvana. Melvins bridged divides between punk and metal bands on the fringes, who – throughout the 1990s – began to cross wires in their wake. “Every Seattle band of the late '80s owes a little something to the Melvins, a band that slowed down the tempo and played sludgy riffs,” Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic has said. Despite their massive influence, Melvins have largely retained a cult following. They signed a major-label contract with Atlantic in 1993, but were dropped by 1996 after three albums: Houdini, the seminal Stoner Witch and Stag. “I always thought we should sell millions of records, it just never happened. The general public doesn’t agree. I didn’t try to not do it. They’re just not interested in what we’re doing on a grand scale,” Osborne has said. “We’re a weird band playing weird music. If you want to like the Melvins, you have to have found us.” Over four decades, Melvins have remained boldly experimental and creatively prolific, releasing over 30 full-length albums. Constantly incorporating new styles and ideas – ambient, jazz, country, industrial, electronic – Melvins continue to broaden the possibilities of their sound and influence generations of artists. Supreme has worked with Melvins on a new collection for Spring 2024. The collection consists of a BDU Jacket, S/S Polo, Hooded Sweatshirt, two T-Shirts, 6-Panel and Pillow. Available May 9th. Available in Asia May 11th. For more information click here |
