Hi,
I think of April as the first week of spring from a training perspective, even if the calendar (and weather) doesn't always agree.
As our athletes ramp up training, you're at the biggest risk of overdoing it. You know the feeling—you end up at home on the couch in a zombie-like trance, unable to be a productive human. Then the next day you pay for it again and can barely get your workout in.
There are three big things that can help with this that work for every athlete, regardless of your training volume.
First be sure to check out this month's limited edition Spring design bottle. You get 2 for Free with your next order of $65.
Go in Repair Mode at Night
I've been using a product that I originally discovered when trying to fix my nagging knee pain that wouldn't go away post-surgery. It's from SwissRX and called Soft Tissue Complex.
I've now shifted and I'm using it as a powerful recovery tool (I like to call it "repair") that I take before bed. I've noticed some great results, so now I'm recommending all our athletes looking to ramp up training give it a try for a month.
This isn't one supplement, but 7 pills that you get in a daily pouch. The pouch makes it super convenient to take at night (and to travel with) as you don't have to count pills as you get ready for bed. It's also best if you take it at least an hour after your last meal.
It combines a 95% Curcumin Turmeric to reduce inflammation, Flavonoids to help tissue repair, Gabanol and Glycine to relax hard-worked muscles (hence taking before bed), and the real secret ingredient: Vascuzyme.
Don't let the name scare you—it has been used in Europe for years. It's a powerful cocktail of enzymes that help break down the protein "cap" that can develop around injured tissues so the turmeric and flavonoids can get to where they need to go.
I recommend you try it for a month and see how it helps your recovery. If you're like me, you'll feel many of those nagging aches and pains fade away. That's probably the biggest motivator for me. When I'm not hurting, I'm always excited to train and push myself more.
More Carbs During Your Workout Will Keep You Off the Couch Later
If you're pushing so hard in training that you're a couch zombie afterward, you need to consider increasing how many carbs you're ingesting per hour while training. With a bit of gut training (stay tuned next week for more on this), you can now get to 120g+ of carbs per hour. If you can maintain this for 2-3 hours (or the total length of your workout), when you get home you can have a lighter snack and be a fully functional human the rest of the day.
My recommendation this whole year has been to start your fueling foundation with a high-carb drink mix. I was pushing the original Maurten Drink Mix all March at a 40% discount (see below on how to still get this deal). Now Maurten is out with what I call their 2.0 Drink Mix.
Maurten 2.0 is everything I loved about Maurten, but now it's way easier to mix. It didn't happen all the time, but sometimes it would become more of a sludge at the bottom of the bottle if I didn't shake it enough. Not anymore. The new 2.0 Drink is easier to mix, and I also feel it's a bit thinner to drink. One other benefit is the addition of a bit of sodium bicarbonate to the drink. Not to help with lactic acid (there isn't enough to do that), but to help protect the enamel of your teeth by neutralizing the pH level of the drink.
Try the new Maurten Drink Mix 2.0 (easier mixing)
Here's My Round-Up of Other Products I'm Using This Week
Beet-it - My Doctor put me on it this week.
I did some blood tests with my doctor and I was super low in Arginine. So she put me on Beet-it once per day. It's a great performance booster—a drink shot of concentrated beet juice. It does taste like beets, but I sort of like it. It works like L-Citrulline does in SwissRX Nitric Oxide; it helps dilate your arteries so more oxygen-rich blood reaches your muscles. Get Beet-it here.
Podium - Making Science Delicious.
New Brand alert! Podium is now at The Feed. While originally more of a CrossFit brand, they have some of the best formulas I've seen for endurance athletes. I first tried the products and was blown away by the taste—all the products were remarkably delicious. In speaking with the founders, I learned they really focused on flavor. There are lots of people that have a hydration, pre-workout, protein, etc., but Podium said "we can have both the best formula AND the best flavors," and they delivered.
Try their Salt + Electrolyte Hydration and their Protein Stroopwafels as your starting point.
Supa Shot - Protein on the go has never been easier
Want 21g of protein on the go, no blender, just take it as a shot? Meet Supa. I'm addicted. It is a Clear Whey protein in Orange Creamsicle flavor. It legit tastes just like an orange creamsicle and is packed with 21g of protein. This is a MUST for you to try. Get a 6 pack here.
Stay Cozy - The Feed Parka
These just arrived, and they are amazing. Inspired by what swimmers wear getting out of the pool, we made a version for all athletes to throw on before or after any workout. Also works as an excellent changing robe or if you're covered in mud on the way home in the car. Get the Parka here.
My goal with all our Feed Gear is to give you the absolute best quality products direct from the same factories charging more than twice as much. For example, our Parka is $99 and is the same (frankly better) quality than those selling for well over $200.
Better yet, become 🥇Feed 1st and get Free Shipping on every order and save 50% on Feed Gear. That's a $50 saving just on the Parka, paying half of your Feed 1st cost right away! You can add Feed 1st and the Parka to your cart at the same time and it will be 50% off at checkout.
Train away!
