We’re used to thinking of confidence as something we either have, or don’t. A mysterious gift bestowed upon those who look a certain way, or possess certain skills. In reality, it’s closer to learning a language, or mastering an instrument: a set of techniques, practiced over time, that change the way we move through the world.
Confidence grows when we know how to speak back to self-doubt, when we can act even while afraid, and when we’ve learnt to recover with dignity from our mistakes. It is not the absence of fear, but the decision to keep going despite it.
The fourth in our workbook series, The Confidence Workbook, is a guide to this practice. Through guided essays and exercises, it helps us understand where our insecurities began and how to replace them with greater effectiveness in our relationships, in our working lives and in our approach to ourselves.
