Early on in a relationship, our fear of rejection seems perfectly understandable. We’re still awaiting confirmation that they like us as much as we do them – and therefore it’s assumed that this fear will dissipate after a few months or years of courtship.
But one of the odder features of relationships is that, in truth, the fear of rejection never ends. Within our psyches, acceptance is never a given, reciprocity is never assured; there can always be new threats, real or perceived, to love’s integrity.
