Why the new GLP-1 pill is such a big deal
This week, the Food and Drug Administration has approved Eli Lilly’s GLP-1 oral pill for sale in the United States. This is big news because previously, patients (or their doctors) had to handle a needle and insert it into their body in order to reap the weight-loss benefits. For the needle-adverse (a category I sadly fall into), this was a deterrent for taking the medication, and now that it’s in pill form, it’s likely the number of people using GLP-1s will increase. 💊
Pam Bondi’s ouster makes Trump’s Justice Department even more dangerous
Bye-bye, Bondi. Attorney General Pam Bondi is the latest in President Donald Trump’s administration to be leaving to transition to a “new job in the private sector.” Even though Bondi broke norms dating back to Nixon meant to keep prosecutors independent, but is her getting the boot actually a good thing? Or will the next person who takes over be more competent in their malice than Bondi was? My colleague Ian Millhiser explores this question in his piece. 🤔
How meat became a measure of manhood
Ever since I moved in with my boyfriend and started coaching spin classes as a fun side gig, protein has been a hot topic in my life. But why does protein have to mean meat (and what’s wrong with eating buttered noodles every once in a while, okay?!)? And why are some men so fixated on eating a seemingly unnatural amount of it? I really enjoyed Kenny Torrella’s approach to answering these questions and exploring the history behind meat and manhood. 🥩 Oh, and I got to help him make a video about it, which you should definitely check out here.
America is going back to the moon
It was a big week for space nerds everywhere as Artemis II successfully launched four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the moon. Caitlin Dewey wrote this fascinating article on why this mission is part of a greater return to the space race by countries around the world. 🚀
What do we lose when we erase ugliness?
Raise your hand if you feel like every post on your social media is insanely beautiful people who profit off of looksmaxxing and openly admit to getting lots of plastic surgery done. 🙋In a world where beauty standards can make us feel less than, I really appreciated this piece by Constance Grady about two memoirists who are choosing to explore the culture of what it means to be ugly instead of conventionally attractive. So what do you think? Should we be embracing ugly?
You can share your thoughts with Constance and ask her questions during her AMA on April 3 at 12 pm EST.
