Tell us about a preset you made for StudioVerse – what’s the story behind its creation?

One of my favorite chains is “Tab Fix My Mix.” I made it for people who are finishing up their productions or mixes and just need simple and straightforward language to describe what they want to fix and what they want to enhance. I think what makes it special is that you can keep to the surface-level macros and get a really good result. It was designed so that no matter how far you spin the knobs, it compensates in a way that won’t create a bad-sounding result.

Where can we hear these chains in action?

The most recent place is Blood, Sweat, and Tears from the new season of Arcane on Netflix. I didn’t use it on the mix bus, but I did use a version of it on the percussion sub-group. It’s a dense track and in order to get everything to work together from section to section I needed to automate quite a few parameters at once; the macros were the best way to get this done.

Share one interesting trick you created in the Macro section of this chain. Or one useful tip you'd recommend that people try with this chain. Anything that would make people smile when they try it :❩

The “Glue” macro brings up the make-up gain on the SSL Comp inversely with the threshold. This is so you can get a generally level-matched assessment of what the compressor is doing. I’d also say people should try the “Density” macro first; this may get them the sonic result they’re after first in parallel.

If I was a nerd and wanted to learn something from this chain, what could it teach me?

Use your ears! It doesn’t take much of a knob turn to get dramatically different results.

Any particular genre or style that you think this chain is especially useful for?
|
|
|
| |
| |
No, it will work with most genres of music with drums/percussion holding down the rhythm section.

Did you stumble upon someone else’s chain in StudioVerse that you can recommend?

I really like Andrew Scheps’ Parallel Presets!
