A Tilt EQ uses a single control to boost treble while cutting bass by the same amount, or vice-versa. This is ideal for making a sound “brighter” or “warmer,” quickly and effectively. We accomplish this using the F6 Dynamic EQ plugin loaded into StudioRack (get the preset here) and relying on StudioRack’s macro controls. Furthermore, this preset also uses the F6’s Dynamic EQ capabilities, and incorporates High Pass and Low Pass filters to trim the frequency range extremes. Here’s a breakdown of what each macro controls:

| |
| |
Center position has no effect. Turn clockwise to boost treble and cut bass, or counterclockwise to boost bass and cut treble. Maximum boost/cut is 6 dB.
| |
| |
| |
Center position is 700 Hz. Turn clockwise for a base tilt frequency up to 2800 Hz, or counterclockwise to go down to 175 Hz.

| |
| |
Sets the level above which the response changes dynamically, by the amount set with the DynEQ Range macro.
| |
| |
| |
Regardless of the Tilt setting, turn Range clockwise for more treble and less bass, or counterclockwise for more bass and less treble.

DynEQ Attack and DynEQ Release
| |
| |
These set how long it takes for dynamics processing to start and end respectively, after the input level exceeds the threshold.
| |
| |
| |
Trims low frequencies from 16 to 125 Hz, with a 12 dB/octave slope.
| |
| |
| |
Trims high frequencies from 4 kHz to 21 kHz, with a 12 dB/octave slope.
| |
| |
Using the DynEQ macro controls as part of your tilt allows seamless control over sound sources with a wide dynamic range, especially if the tonal qualities vary greatly across that range.
| |
| |
For example, counterclockwise DynEQ Range settings are ideal when using a brighter tilt with acoustic guitar. Softer levels will have bright strumming. However, hitting the strings hard enough to exceed the Threshold will turn down the treble to tame aggressive strums, and emphasize the guitar’s body tone.

| |
| |
Similarly, with a drum bus set for a brighter tilt, a loud crash cymbal that exceeds the Threshold will lower the treble and focus the kick.
