The Utility Vest is near and dear to us, having first debuted as a special project by Best Made's founder before he re-acquired the brand. Fully lined with two layers of a fine cord woven in Osaka, Japan, a material we worked with extensively in the old Best Made, and have always admired for its comfort and durability.
The fabric in our Small Stripe Ball Cap will be familiar to some. Consult our archive and you'll see it repeatedly and proudly on display. Woven in Okayama, Japan's premier denim-making prefecture, the rich indigo dye makes for a handsome hickory stripe that recalls the most iconic pieces of American work wear.
Despite having developed many apparel and bag projects in my career, I did not know how to sew. So, during the pandemic before I got Best Made back, I bought an old Singer 301A sewing machine and began making things. One of the first projects I assigned myself was a vest. Learning to sew—transforming a flat piece of fabric into a functional object, making (not buying)—felt like some sort of miracle. It was daunting at first, and then thrilling. Being in my workshop, hunkered over my 301A was as good as any adventure I'd ever been on.
