- Now the EU is asking questions about Meta’s ‘pay or be tracked’ consent model [techcrunch.com]
"Meta made the controversial switch to a so-called 'consent or pay' business model in the EU last fall, after challenges to two other legal bases it had claimed for processing users' data for ad targeting forced it to rethink its approach," reports Natasha Lomas. Now, regulators have sent a formal request for information under the Digital Services Act (DSA), asking Meta to “provide more detail on the 'Subscription for no Ads options' it gives regional users of [Facebook and Instagram]."
- The FBI's New Tactic: Catching Suspects With Push Alerts [washingtonpost.com]
The FBI was able to use "a small string of code in [encrypted Swiss messaging app, TeleGuard] used to send push alerts" to a suspect's phone to catch him. This was made possible by "a little-known quirk of push alerts... Those tokens can be used to identify users and are stored on servers run by Apple and Google, which can hand them over at law enforcement’s request." Privacy activists are concerned about how, under varying legislators or without proper regulations in place, this "data could be used to surveil Americans."

Shira Ovide says "America's most popular tax-prep website [TurboTax] asks you to sign away the ironclad privacy protections of your tax return, including details of your income, home mortgage and student loan," which they can then use to show you advertisements for "things like credit cards and mortgage offers targeted to your financial situation."
She shares how to decline permission to "share your data" or use your tax information to "improve your experience."
