"The fledgling neurotechnology space is filled with products that promise all sorts of utility by reading your brainwaves." In a letter sent to the Federal Trade Commission, a group of US senators "called for an investigation into neurotech companies’ handling of user data, ringing the alarm bells that some deeply sensitive and personal information may be getting sold."
- TikTok Fined $600 Million for Sending European User Data to China [nytimes.com]
"TikTok was fined 530 million euros ($600 million) [by the Irish Data Protection Commission]... for violating a European Union data privacy law after regulators found the company had improperly transferred users’ personal data to China," says Adam Satariano. "The fine is one of the largest imposed under the law and adds to the challenges faced by TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, amid a U.S. effort to force the platform’s sale to a non-Chinese company or be banned in the United States."
- Kids Should Avoid AI Companion Bots—Under Force of Law, Assessment Says [themarkup.org]
"Children shouldn’t speak with companion chatbots because such interactions risk self harm and could exacerbate mental health problems and addiction. That’s according to a risk assessment conducted by children’s advocacy group Common Sense Media," with input from a lab at Stanford. Why? Participating experts warn that "young kids can struggle with distinguishing fantasy and reality, and teens are vulnerable to parasocial attachment and may use social AI companions to avoid the challenges of building real relationships."
