The debut of ruck running in the 2019 CrossFit Games led to two MAJOR gear improvements at GORUCK. Here’s the story.
I flew out to The Ranch in California to meet Dave Castro months before the Games. He informed me he was going to add ruck running into the Games (for the first time), and not to tell anyone. I found out the workout details when everyone else did, and I thought it was a fresh take on rucking to increase the weight over time.
After the event, we learned a few things:
We changed the back panel of the Rucker and Ruck Plate Carrier to 210D CORDURA so they could be worn shirtless.
This change was made because athletes who went shirtless got a ton of friction burn on their backs after running with their 1000D CORDURA Rucker 2.0. I was happily one of the guinea pigs in the testing process.
We designed the Rough Runners for a "niche" activity called ruck running. The goal was comfort AND support -- so that you could carry weight and move it.
The happy accident was that the support required for the physical demands of ruck running -- those solutions also transferred to loaded lifts. And as Tia has publicly stated, LIFTING heavy ass weight also works well in our “Runners.” I wish we could take credit for this, we did not expect it but are glad they are so versatile, as that’s always our goal.
AUGUST 8TH - 11TH, 2024
In January 2024, CrossFit introduced GORUCK as the Official Footwear and Apparel Provider of CrossFit and the 2024 CrossFit Games. We’ve built over 29,000 pieces of apparel in the United States of America in support of the Athletes and the CrossFit Community. We are proud of what we’ve built -- there’s soul in every stitch -- and think they’ll meet your demands as an athlete, too.
