A few months back, I had the pleasure of chatting with Hillary Brenhouse, the founder and editor-in-chief of Elastic, a new print publication about psychedelic art and literature. We mostly commiserated about the difficulties of running print magazines, but also talked about how gratifying it is, especially that once-in-a-lifetime feeling of putting a first issue out into the world. On that note, Elastic’s first issue is finally here and, having already powered through half my copy, I highly encourage you to get one yourself. It completely reframed my idea of what we consider both visually or culturally “psychedelic,” and was a genuinely inspiring Sunday read. If you’re in New York, they’re having a launch party at Honey’s in Bushwick on May 8th. RSVP here.

I have no idea if this is a brand new game or something that’s been floating around the internet for years (who knows, maybe you all already play it). But I just came across Which Year, a simple site that challenges you to guess the year a photo was taken. Because photography is a relatively recent medium (unlike, say, painting), there are really only so many years an image can be from. While that makes the game a bit easier, it also means that if you’re only a year or two off the mark, you’re gonna struggle against opponents who nailed it exactly. If Wordle or Spelling Bee are too letter-heavy for you, maybe this image competition will be more your speed.

The other day, I ate one of Sundae School’s Lychee Dragon mochis before a facial and promptly melted into the table. Toward the end of my session, the esthetician tried to upsell me on a microcurrent treatment, and I was so relaxed I almost asked if I could pay extra just to lie on the table for an additional 30 minutes.

If you’ve missed being able to pop in and peruse party wares, Big Night’s original pint-size Greenpoint location has officially reopened with a new and improved footprint. The expanded space is set up like a shoppable home (including kitchen, dining, and bar) and features a handpainted mural by artist Lucy Muss. The new shop is genuinely destination worthy—and will be even more so once their backyard space opens. Go now and stock up so that you’re never caught empty handed with an impromptu invite.

I bought one (and then a second) of these water-resistant picnic blankets when my son was still an infant, but we’ve continued to use them extensively in the years following. There are other brands that make similar blankets that easily fold up (and still more that roll), but this is only one I have experience with so, naturally, the one I’ll recommend. Our Midnight Poppy blanket has come in handy in the park, at the beach, and on a mountain, protecting our food from ants and our bodies from ticks. Now that the weather is changing, if you plan to spend more time outside just lying about, I highly suggest picking one up. Nearly every liquid has been spilled and more than a few diapers have been changed on mine, and they still look brand new.

Surely the most fun dog adoption event in Brooklyn, Woofstock is set for next Saturday, May 3rd, in Gowanus. Aside from dog-friendly activities (and dogs ready to go home with you), there are neighborhood vendors, food stalls, and, I’m guessing, pre-rolls from Dogwalkers since they’re a sponsor on the bill. (If not, there are a couple of dispensaries within walking distance.) In any event, seems like a solid way to spend a chill Saturday afternoon, support small businesses, and meet some cool animals.
