I made this cake as a St. Patrick’s Day treat earlier this week and it’s as easy as it is exceptional. There’s something about the buttery, Guinness-swirled batter that makes the end result supremely moist and densely chocolatey. The only adjustment I’d make is to the icing, which I prefer a little fluffier. I think a full cup of heavy cream gives you the just-right ratio of texture, tang, and sweetness.

Despite buying apparel from MUJI for 20 years (one of the best winter coats I ever owned was purchased at their Oxford Street store in 2005), I never really think to shop for clothes there. In my head, I’m just not the right build for their styles. However, while picking up some new pens recently, I was drawn to a beige chore coat (as I am to all chore coats) and tried it on not expecting much. You ever find a piece of clothing that instantly feels like a part of your identity? Well, that’s what happened here. And let me tell you, I love this coverall jacket so much, I ordered two more, one as backup for when my dog or kid inevitably stains the shit out of the original, and one in blue. Luckily for me (and us all), the coat is 20% off right now as part of MUJI’s spring sale. Oh, and did I mention it’s made from kapok and organic cotton? So it’s surprisingly eco-friendly and sustainable, too. I ran into an old friend yesterday, someone I hadn’t seen in years. Their first words to me? “Nice jacket.”

Unlike last High Praise when I recommended a low-dose offering, this week is all about high dose. (Or at least “high dose” for the average cannabis consumer.) That’s not to say that these Balanced Tamarindo edibles from Mesobis are overwhelming or too much. On the contrary, each 10mg gummy is a delightful and delicious drip of calm. A good after-work or before-going-out edible, perhaps best eaten half at a time until you know you’re good with 10mg.

I don’t even like cake. However, the other day a slice of one of ByClio’s creations was thrust upon me and now I’m a semi-convert. Located in Gowanus (and conveniently/unfortunately near my son’s swim school), this place is like if any of those pretty Instagram cake accounts actually tasted delicious. The genius is in the perfect amount of sweetness (not overly so but also not too healthy-tasting) and the range of flavors. Take this Strawberry Milk Cake, for instance. It features roasted sumac strawberry filling and labneh cream-top frosting. Or this Coconut Rose Cake, made with two ingredients I don't really care for but that I still inhaled. Basically, this bakery takes things I don’t really like and makes me want them. I can’t think of a better endorsement.
