If you’re not already familiar with stylist and creative director Juliana Salazar, you’re probably at least a little bit familiar with her work with brands like Aimé Leon Dore, Comme Si, and Crown Affair. Salazar’s latest move is also her first official collaboration: a pair of powder blue and silver-accented Gel-Kayano™️14s for Asics. While Salazar offered a limited drop of the sneakers on her own site earlier this week (don’t worry, I missed it too), the full release rolls out today in select stores, including Ven. Space in Brooklyn, Somewhere in D.C., Bodega in Boston, and Asics.com.

I was somewhat familiar with Dr. Nicholas Powers, a professor at SUNY Old Westbury, having heard him speak about psychedelics on a couple of industry podcasts. However I was unaware he had a new book out, Black Psychedelic Revolution, until I saw his interview this week in The Microdose. Having read a number of books on the general subject—and being in the middle of writing one!—I’ve seen a plethora of different focuses and histories branch out from the main tree of psychedelics. But from Powers’ words, this book seems different. Tying together the history of racial oppression, the failed War on Drugs, and his own personal experience with tryptamines and plant medicines, Black Psychedelic Revolution promises to be a necessary read for this specific moment in time, regardless of background or belief. I’ve put my order in and I’m eager to read it (as soon as I finish this book about the ‘90s Knicks).

Red Chaconia has been on my list for months, so it’s only fitting that I write this recommendation while sitting at a table inside it. Less than a year old, this cafe in Prospect Lefferts Gardens is everything you want in a local establishment: incredibly friendly service, great food, and opened by someone from the neighborhood. There are so many little touches here that make it wonderful, from their secret simple syrup recipe to their seriously spicy sambal sauce. I’ve yet to have a bad bite, but if I had to pick one, I’d say their bacon, egg, and cheese on a brioche is my favorite (although I know the egg burrito is their top seller). Just around the block from Prospect Park, stop in and help support a local business!

On an otherwise relatively unassuming stretch of Edridge Street, tucked between a shoe store and a beauty salon, you’ll find New York City’s only 100% free golf club. Topping out at 200 square feet, Whim Golf Club more than makes up for it in vibes, as well as state-of-the-art putters, plenty of balls, and friendly staff ready and willing to help you learn. Swing by (lol) if you’re in the neighborhood, and bring a few friends and a pack of Pure Beauty’s Fressshies to share.

I can’t think of anything I need more right now than “calm.” I imagine many of you are the same. And while I’m a firm believer in standing up against whatever the hell is happening in D.C. and beyond, I also recognize the need to pace oneself or risk burning out mere weeks into all of this. I’m not going to sit here and tell you that consuming cannabis is a panacea for all your troubles nor do I want to tie selling a product to the genuinely disturbing situation that’s unfolding, so I’ll just speak for me: when the day is long over and my parental duties are done and I find myself unable to pry my phone from my hands, taking an edible—specifically these Mellow Blue Raspberry ones from Off hours—gives me enough separation from the world to relax, read, watch something, check in with a friend, or just go to sleep. It’s a helpful tool to have in a double-locked box on a shelf way up high in my closet (don’t tell my son).
