11 Things That Changed My Life This June |
Summer comes with a packed calendar of weddings, barbecues, and Friday afternoon road trips, which seem fun but can also feel like a second job. That is why my modest mission these past two months has been to relish having to be nowhere—my phone dead, left behind, or Bricked—where I have no obligations other than to listen to my instincts and embrace the unknown. Helping me on that mission: I went to Japan last month for vacation, where my boyfriend and I put away our pinned-to-oblivion Google Maps and used our eyes, ears, and noses to guide us toward the good shit. (And reader, there is sooo much of it in Japan, a country that uses sing-songy jingles for everything and stocks cheap, fresh onigiri in all of its 7-11s.)
Below are a handful of the amazing new things I discovered by paying a little bit more attention to my surroundings. Some of them revealed themselves to me in unexpected places (though you do not need to travel across the world to find those places). Others evoke the kind of low-commitment, stress-free summer I myself will be striving for. Go forth with your phone in your pocket and unearth something new for you!

I will just put this out there: I haven’t had a lot of luck with face oils. Too often I have embraced a version of this product as my daily moisturizer, and been promptly rebuked with a break-out. But I liked the backstory of Circa 1970 enough to suspend my prejudices. The company was founded by Barbara Guillaume & Amy Komorowski—two high-profile men’s groomers in Hollywood who have worked with everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio to Bradley Cooper. In other words, two woman who can’t afford to give their clientele a face product that might cause an inopportune breakout. So I took the mini version of their face oil on vacation, and used it as a lightweight, easy-to-apply daily moisturizer. Not only did it save me room in my dopp kit, but by the end of the trip it had reinstated my belief in face oils. The formula is lightweight, not overly scented, and absorbs like a dream. And after two weeks on the road, my skin was glowing. Partly because, uh, I was on vacation. But also because of the oil!
2. RoToTo Retro Athletic Ankle Socks |
In Japan, after visiting so many Google Map pins in Tokyo’s Shibuya district, we wandered through the sleepier, stylish neighborhood of Nishihara where we happened upon a charming tiled sock store. I love socks. If I were ever a billionaire the main psychotic, wasteful thing I would do is wear a new pair every day. And now that I have been to RoToTo, and had the cushion-y cotton soles of their product grace my feet, I can say they are the most comfortable socks that I’ve ever worn. Not to mention, they come in a variety of different weaves and stylish colorways. (I’m partial to the gorpy wool and preppy, striped pairs.) Sadly there are no RoToTo brick and mortar stores here in the US, but a good number of US shops stock them.
3. Loewe Tomato Leaves Hand Cream |
One source of endless discovery for me this summer? My tomato garden. I went a little overboard and planted something like 15, 16 different varieties this year. Which means I am always stealing pockets of time to slip outside and prune away suckers and moldy branches—and now that we are almost into July—harvest a seemingly neverending supply of red, yellow, and purple gems. I frequently come into my house smelling like tomato vines, wash my hands, then wish I still smelled like tomato vines. Which is why I was thrilled to hear that Loewe’s is expanding its Tomato Leaves Bath collection this month. Since I got their new hand lotion, I’ve now added its application as a final step to gardening clean-up. It smells just as herbaceous as my plants—just slightly more sophisticated. It would make for a great host gift for the gardener in your life.
